No Smoking……anywhere it appears….

Noticed this sign earlier on today and felt i just had to post something about it….

No Smoking!

I’m all in favour of the smoking ban, as in many ways, its helped me cut down on how much i smoke rather than the usual chain smoking with a pint that often used to ensue on a night out. However, there are some things about this smoking ban that annoy me, usually my only moan about the law is not being allowed to smoke at train stations, even when there is no one else on the platform, or at least no-one near where the smoking is taking place (far end of Gatwick airport platform for example, more chance of breathing in aviation fumes than any cigarette smoke! and have these people not seen the exhaust that comes off some of the trains!)

however, the pic above really does show how this law could be going a little too far when it is illegal to smoke walking through a subway that can be walked through in something like 8 paces! its not exactly the kind of place that large numbers of people congregate and whilst it is true it is an enclosed space, is it really going to do any harm to anyone if someone smoking walks through it? i think not…..

anyway, my rant is over and i hope you’ve enjoyed reading it…..take care, g

  1. Rant all you want. Tobacco Nazis rule and we’re not gonna do a damn thing about it.

  2. The point of the ban is not to protect nonsmokers–it’s to punish smokers and make them feel unwelcome.

  3. That’s genius.
Do they have hidden fire extinguishers that get triggered if you step into the tunnel with a ciggie?
You could get gunked like on early 90s telly AND break the law at the same time! Rock on.

  4. You support a smoking ban to help you cut down on how much you smoke? They are helping you further by limiting smoking where you prefer to smoke. What is your complaint?? That you require the government to help you cut down on your own smoking or you lack the spine to make choices for yourself? Smoking ban supporters like you are actually worse than those that impose them with lies and deceit.

  5. Oh where are those spray can artists when you need them. A nice Nazi motif would be nice.

  6. Don’t complain about something you asked for or tolerated for your own convenience.

  7. seeing as I’m getting a lot of hits from the forces.org site I thought I should just correct an error in the article as I cant comment on it! (http://forces.org/News_Portal/news_viewer.php?id=927)

“…a photograph of a tunnel underneath the tracks at an outdoor train station”. The photo wasn’t taken at a train station, anywhere on a station is non-smoking and thus a subway would not need a seperate sign! the picture was taken near a local car park, where its fine to smoke!

the more I’ve thought about the article I wrote the more I think that my real problem with it is the waste of taxpayers money on erecting a sign in such a place!

thanks for all the comments though I think some of them are perhaps a little harsh…the original post was written a little in jest as well as trying to make a point more about a pointless sign than any great comment on the law.

    take care all,

    Geoff
